Drawing upon the rivers and topography of her native landscape, Janet Fredericks creates paintings and works on paper that are simultaniously maps, indicators of place, and subtle tracings of experience. Trees, shrubs, and plant life join rising land masses, pathways of wildlife and meandering rivers. Together, they form a vital vocabulary through which the artist speaks. These mappings refer not only to surface topography but to what lies beneath... the seen and unseen life of our natural world.

For the past 15 years Janet Fredericks has been drawn to water, first drawing hulls of boats and ships, to fish, and then to making drawings directly in water itself recording what the artist calls "the language of flowing water." She has collaborated with other artists, poets, and dancers to interact with and honor water.
